There are slots that are based on famous movies, and then there are those which are loosely based on movies without actually officially referencing the subject matter, but doing it subtly enough to not seem cheap or tacky.
Then there’s BetSoft’s Ogre Empire, a slot that puts bigger teeth on Shrek and pretends it’s based on an original idea.
About the slot
With five reels and 25 paylines, there is no denying that Ogre Empire is an excellent looking slot with an epic feel and stunning graphics, but the frankly ridiculously derivative style of the design takes a lot away from that.
With playing card filler symbols on the reels, as well as the ogre, a club, a toadstool, and more, everything is well put together here and creates a nice feel in general.
It really wouldn’t have taken much to make this slot different enough to be interesting, but instead, what you get is a slot that is so clearly trying to take advantage of a popular movie without actually referencing it that it’s a little sad to see, especially from a developer as good as BetSoft.
Gameplay
The game cycles between day and night as you play, the Ogre will occasionally smash stone symbols during the day to give up extra rewards, when night falls, the Ogre goes to sleep, and the townsfolk become active and can lead to big wins.
The King and Queen can also return during nightfall, and if they do, they bring the Joker with them, which acts as a wild and will double any wins it is a part of.
The day and night modes are good fun here, and create genuinely innovative gameplay options for players, if only a little bit of that unique approach had been put into the design of the slot, we’d all be laughing!
