Dr Zappo Features
Dr Zappo is not overflowing with features, although that may be deceiving. The main attractions are Wild Eyeball Symbols, Bonus Games and Feature Buy.
Wild Eyeball Symbols
Wild Eyeballs only land on the bottom row and activate from left to right. Each one fires straight upwards, diagonally left or diagonally right. Every paying symbol caught in its path turns Wild, with some receiving an additive multiplier from 2x to 200x.
If an Eyeball strikes an existing Wild, that symbol receives a multiplier. Hitting an already multiplied Wild increases its current multiplier by an additional value. Once its journey is complete, the Eyeball also turns Wild.
Three Energy Fields surround the top, left and right sides of the grid. An Eyeball that reaches one can ricochet and continue across the reels, creating further Wilds along its new path. A direct hit sends it back in the direction it came, with another chance to strengthen Wild Multipliers already created.
When several Wild Multipliers contribute to the same win, their values are added together before the total multiplier is applied.

Dr Zappo Verdict
Dr Zappo is an entertaining slot, but those familiar with Jaws of Justice will instantly recognise the similarities. The Wild Eyeballs replace the Laser Sharks, Energy Fields replace Force Fields, and the three Free Spins rounds follow much the same progression. The 5×4 layout, 14 paylines, additive Wild Multipliers and 10,000x maximum win are also shared by both games.
That makes it difficult to regard Dr Zappo as a genuinely new idea. There are differences, though. Volatility has dropped from a high in Jaws of Justice to a medium here, while the reported hit frequency has increased from 30.8% to 45%. Dr Zappo also has a slightly higher top RTP of 96.31%, compared with 96.20% for its predecessor.
The saving grace is that the original mechanic was worth revisiting. Watching an Eyeball fire across the grid, turn symbols Wild and ricochet from an Energy Field can produce some excellent sequences. The possibility of additive multipliers reaching 200x builds anticipation as several Wilds begin to appear.
I also prefer Dr Zappo visually. The eccentric scientist, eyeball-obsessed town and colourful laboratory have considerably more personality than the mechanics might suggest. Hacksaw has clearly had fun with the theme, even if it has been far less adventurous beneath the surface.
So, have Hacksaw done enough? Dr Zappo is very close to a reskin of Jaws of Justice, and players hoping for another innovative Hacksaw slot may be disappointed by its familiarity.
