Association of British Bookmakers, now BGC
The Association of British Bookmakers (ABB), which once represented the interests of high street betting shops across the UK, has now been merged into the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) as part of a shift towards having a unified body representing the entire UK gambling sector.
This transition occurred in 2019 when the BGC replaced the Remote Gambling Association (RGA) and the ABB to give the industry a single voice. The BGC now works on behalf of over 90% of the UK’s gambling operators (excluding lotteries) and strongly focuses on safer gambling initiatives, ensuring consumer protection, and raising industry standards. One of the key figures in this new organisation is Brigid Simmonds OBE, who was appointed chair of the BGC. She brings extensive experience from the British Beer & Pub Association and GambleAware.
