With his gritty, anyone-can-do-it American hero, Sly Stallone garnered the adoration of millions worldwide with his performances as Rocky, so it came as little surprise to pundits that a slot-based tribute had been made by Playtech. With its penchant for knocking out slots based on superheroes from the world of comic books, it seemed only logical that the software giant would eventually develop a game based on a character that could feasibly exist in the real world. Well, more or less, anyway:

Rocky Balboa’s rise from hapless debt collector to heavyweight champion may not be the most credible rise to glory in the history of cinema, yet somehow his trilogy of films remain strangely compelling, and the three of them combined make for a rather magnificent slot game.

Game

The team behind this development is obvious as soon as you see this game: The player controls and reelface styling are more than a little reminiscent of those from Playtech’s Marvel series, but that’s no real criticism: It’s a formula that works well and will appeal to the same audience with its stars, stripes and bold, macho vibe.

Bet per line is set with from 1 to 10 levels, with each level worth from 1p up to £5 at the fully-unrestricted level. That means a maximum bet per line in some casinos of £50; with 25 lines you could therefore conceivably bet £1,250 per spin. This should give you an idea of the type of player they’re aiming at…

Theme

All the main characters from the films are on show here, with Apollo Creed and the increasingly ludicrous opponents that followed him all taking on good ol’ Rambo in an epic fight to the bitter end. You’ll score from 5 up to 1,000 times your line bet for basic symbol matches, or 10,000 times for the Rocky wild symbol – that’s a cool half million quid at the highest £50 per line bet level.

The Italian Stallion scatter symbol is worth up to 100 times your total bet; it also comes with up to 25 free spins and a double multiplier, which would net you £1 million if you lined up a full set of wilds. After that a progressive jackpot would seem futile, and thankfully there isn’t one on this game.

You can also attempt to spell the word ‘Rocky’ across the reels to win 5 times your total bet in a pinball-esque twist on the usual slot features that you see.

Bonus Round

There’s also a red or black gamble feature with a double up limit set at £2,500, which is a rather uninspired idea that doesn’t really cut it on a headline slot any more, but never mind: There’s also a proper bonus round, with Rocky taking on Creed, Lang and Drago in successive bouts, collecting cash for you if he wins. They’ve used proper clips from the films here, which are appreciated and add some class to a game that would still punch above its weight without them.

The appeal of this game is twofold: Firstly, it’s a genuine effort to bring the drama of the series alive, rather than just using images and music from the film. Big tick. Secondly, the potential payouts are stupendously big, as are the maximum bets possible in unrestricted form. If you decide to take this game on, you need to be prepared to go the distance, and that means a bankroll to match. This is real death or glory stuff, so be aware of what you’re letting yourself in for and double check your bet level before spinning…
