Riches of Midgard: Land and Expand Design
The design is excellent, but you’d expect nothing less from NetEnt. This Viking-themed slot sees the 3 x 3 reels against the beautiful rolling hills and snow-capped mountains within the realm of Midgard. The reels are encased in a wooden contraption that looks like a catapult and there is a rhythmic Nordic soundtrack to compliment the theme.
The lower value symbols are the 10 to A and the higher values are horns, meat joints, and 3 main characters; Odin, Freya and Thor. Odin has the highest value, paying out 5x or 15x for 2 or 3 in a combination.
Gameplay and Features
There are 2 hotspot reels at the side of the main grid that spin with the main reels in order to trigger re-spins and free spins. They don’t form wins though. If you managed to match up symbols on 2 reels and both hotspot reels, this activates the Land and Expand feature. You then get to re-spin and any triggering symbols expand over the full reel and lock into place.
There is no wild in the base game but the scatter (Thor’s hammer) triggers the free spins when you land 3 of them. You’ll start with 8 free spins and every time a scatter lands on the 3rd reel, you’ll receive 2 more free spins. More rows are added each time, up to 7, increasing your potential winning lines to 29.
Wilds can only appear in the free spins round and if one from the hotspot reels matches the other symbols, this can also trigger the land and expand and free spins rounds.
Verdict
This is a simple, yet fun slot, that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The maximum win of 435x your stake is on the low side, but the variance is low, so there’s plenty of smaller wins to make up for it. It’s probably more suited to casual or new players.
