It’s fair to say that Pragmatic Play are pretty hit and miss when it comes to the slots they produce, but when they get it right, they tend to get it very, very right.
Lucky New Year is, visually, not one of the best that the developer has produced, but there’s a lot to like in terms of gameplay.
Celebrating the Year of the Dog, which started recently, Lucky New Year is another Chinese New Year themed slot, making it far from the most original in terms of concept.
About the slot
This five-reel, 25 payline slot, playable from 25p to £125 a spin on all compatible desktop, mobile, and tablet devices, is fairly disappointing in terms of design.
Set in a pagoda building, the reels are adorned with various themed symbols including a dragon, drums, and firecrackers, while the omnipresent J, Q, K, and A card faces play the part of the lower value symbols.
It’s all pretty basic in terms of concept, and the execution leaves a lot to be desired as well, all in all, this is one of the least impressive looking of all the slots that share this theme, which is a bad start.
Gameplay
There’s a few decent features here, which make up for the look a bit.
Land six or more lantern symbols to trigger the Money Respins feature, where more lanterns (all withy cash amounts on them) can land with respins, when the round ends, you will win the combined value of all lantern symbols on the reels.
Land three scatter symbols and you’ll trigger the free spins feature, this will give you five free spins with one colossal symbol taking up the middle three reels, if you’re lucky, this can be a very profitable feature.
Certainly better in terms of gameplay than design, Lucky New Year has some fun aspects to it.
