Hot Potato Battleground is a video slot developed by Thunderkick scheduled for general release on 23 September 2026. Unibet and 32Red received exclusive early access on 16 September, giving players a week-long head start.

The sequel to 2023’s Hot Potato takes its combustible characters into battle, replacing the original diner with a chaotic military camp. Thunderkick retains the 7×7 Cluster Pays format, Avalanches and position multipliers, but expands the exploding potato concept with an entire squad of specialist Wilds and Support Features.

High volatility and a maximum win of 10,000x the bet suggest the potatoes have returned with considerably more firepower. The Free Spins introduce persistent position multipliers, while the various potato soldiers attack different areas of the grid as the game develops.

Our Hot Potato Battleground slot review heads to the front line to find out whether the spuds are fighting a battle worth winning, or roasting in their own firepower.

Hot Potato Battleground RTP and Technical Details

Hot Potato Battleground is played on a 7×7 grid using Cluster Pays, with wins formed by five or more matching symbols connected horizontally or vertically. Winning clusters disappear through the Avalanche system, allowing new symbols to fall into the vacant positions and potentially continue the sequence.

The default RTP is 94.23%, which is noticeably below the 96% figure commonly seen across online slots. High volatility accompanies a 25.06% hit frequency, so roughly one in four spins produces a win on average, although individual sessions will naturally vary.

Bets normally range from 0.10 to 100 per spin. UK regulations reduce the upper limit considerably, restricting online slot stakes to £5 for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24.

At the top end of the paytable, Hot Potato Battleground has a maximum win of 10,000x the bet.

Design and Presentation

Hot Potato Battleground transports the rebellious spuds into the wilderness, where the original diner is replaced by a cartoon-style military camp. Mountains and dense forest surround the battlefield, while lookout towers, sandbags, tents and a field kitchen create a new setting. Helicopters and aircraft pass overhead as the potato uprising gathers pace.

The 7×7 grid resembles a military noticeboard, topped with radar equipment, ammunition and a field radio. A large gun points towards the reels from one side, while a cooking pot waits rather ominously on the other.

Thunderkick’s artwork adds a tonne of personality. The potato soldiers are excellent, featuring helmets, uniforms and exaggerated expressions distinguishing the different recruits. Bright greens, oranges and yellows create a realistic battlefield vibe, while retaining the playful cartoon style associated with its predecessor

The military theme becomes more animated during the Support Features. Specialist potato soldiers enter the grid, targeting different areas before explosions clear symbols and continue the Avalanche sequence. Despite all the artillery,

Tanks, artillery and air support might suggest serious warfare, but the soldiers are still potatoes fighting for survival against a cook. Thunderkick has fully committed to the absurd premise, with excellent artwork transforming each recruit into a character rather than another feature symbol.

Symbols and Payouts

Hot Potato Battleground features the Cluster Pays mechanic, requiring at least five matching symbols connected horizontally or vertically. Larger clusters reward the bigger payouts. The top regular symbol values reached when 25 or more matching symbols connect.

The lower-paying symbols are the apple, chocolate bar and water bottle, awarding between 10x and 20x the bet for clusters of 25+. Higher-paying symbols are the hot dog, bag of chips, sandwich and cook, with equivalent clusters paying between 25x and 100x.

Three different Potato Wilds appear among the special symbols. The Turret, Crosshair, Walkie-Talkie, Satellite Dish and Red Button are connected to the various Support Features. The glowing HOT Scatter triggers the Bonus Game.

We’ll cover the Wilds and special symbols separately below.

Hot Potato Battleground Features

As the potatoes head off to the battlefield, will they achieve their goal or end up mashed, boiled or roasted by the cook? Hot Potato Battleground features Avalanches, Multiplier Positions, three Potato Wilds, Support Features and a Bonus Game.

Multiplier Grid & Cascading

Winning clusters explode and disappear from the grid, allowing the remaining symbols to drop into the empty spaces before new symbols drop down. Every position involved in a win receives a 2x multiplier.

Further winning clusters during the same sequence double the multipliers on any positions included in the win, progressing from 2x to 4x, 8x and eventually 128x. When a cluster covers several multiplied positions, their values are added together before the multiplier is applied to the win.

Cascades continue until no further winning clusters form. The Multiplier Grid then resets before the next paid spin.

Exploding Wilds

After a winning cluster, a random Exploding Wild is left behind. The Wild then detonates across part of the grid, doubling the multipliers on every position caught in the blast. There are three Potato Wilds, each with a unique attack pattern:

Potato Wild: Explodes across a 3×3 area surrounding its position.

General Potato Wild: Extends the blast to a 5×5 area.

Sniper Potato Wild: Targets the entire row and column crossing its position.

Any symbols removed by the explosion clear space for the Cascade to continue.

Support Features

Special symbols may appear during a Cascade. An explosion must reach the symbol to trigger its Support Feature, with five different effects available:

Turret: Three Potato Wilds are added to the reels.

Crosshair: Three Sniper Potato Wilds are placed on the grid.

Walkie-Talkie: Five Scout Wilds are added in random positions. It can trigger up to three times during the same round.

Satellite Dish: Transforms every instance of one low-paying symbol into a higher-paying symbol. This can trigger up to three times during the round, affecting three different symbols.

Red Button: Clears all symbols from the grid, doubles all existing position multipliers, and awards a respin.

Hot Potato Battleground Free Spins

Landing three HOT Scatters anywhere on the grid during a single base game round triggers eight Free Spins. The Multiplier Grid is cleared before the feature begins, removing any multipliers created during the triggering round.

Multipliers generated during Free Spins remain in their positions between spins, allowing the Multiplier Grid to develop throughout the bonus. Landing three HOT Scatters during a single Free Spin awards four additional spins.

Feature Buy

Hot Potato Battleground includes several Bet+ options and Feature Buy. Each option has a fixed price based on the current bet:

Bonus Boost – 1.7x: Increases the chance of triggering the Bonus Game by 4x.

Bonus Boost Plus – 3x: Increases the 10x more likely to trigger the Bonus Game

Nuke – 3.5x: Guarantees a Red Button symbol.

Bonus Boost Extreme – 10x: Increases the Bonus Game frequency to once every 10 spins on average.

Battle Mode – 10x: Guarantees at least three Support Features.

Feature Buy – 100x: Provides direct access to the Bonus Game.

Feature Buy is not available to UK players, while access to the Bet+ options depends on local regulation.

Hot Potato Battleground Verdict

Hot Potato Battleground takes the simple idea behind the original and develops it into a more substantial sequel. The 7×7 Cluster Pays format, Avalanches and position multipliers provide continuity, while the expanded potato army and Support Features introduce far more interaction across the grid.

The persistent Multiplier Grid during Free Spins is an important improvement, as progress now develops across the entire bonus rather than disappearing after each sequence. Exploding Wilds and Support Features complement the existing format well, while the 10,000x maximum win is considerably higher than the original’s 5,000x ceiling.

Thunderkick has resisted changing the fundamentals simply for the sake of a sequel. Instead, Hot Potato Battleground expands the original idea with more features, better bonus progression and another excellent piece of cartoon design. The potatoes may still be destined for the fryer, but at least they have arrived better armed this time.
