Yggdrasil take us to the African jungle in their May 2021 slot release, HippoPop. This utilises the PopWins mechanic and features a bonus wheel, changing reelsets, free spins, multipliers and wilds. HippoPop Design
This isn’t your usual African themed slot. The graphics and visuals are very graphic and stylised, with green jungle plants and flowers to the side and a bright green and yellow light from behind the reels.
The 5×3 reels have a dark purple background and the symbols are all very stylised in their design; if you were expecting cute, cartoon style graphics, then you would be wrong. We have J to A royals alongside zebras, frogs, flamingos, fish, birds, big cats and a gold hippo. The hippo is the most valuable, paying 4x your stake for 5 on a payline.
Gameplay and Features
HippoPop features the PopWin mechanic so every time you form a win, those symbols ‘pop’ off the reels and are replaced by 2 more symbols, increasing both your ways to win, and chances of forming another win. If you form another win, this ‘Pops’ again and continues until there are no more wins.
During the base game, the reels can increase to 6 symbols in height and when it does, an increasing 1x multiplier comes into play. This keeps increasing until no more wins are formed.
If you trigger the free spins round, the increasing multiplier is active here too, but continues increasing, even if a win isn’t formed. You’ll start with 5 free spins and the popwins occur for every winning combination. You can increase the reels up to a maximum of 8 reels high and when you do, all your winnings are quadrupled.
Verdict
The design is unique, if not a little strange, but it works well. There is plenty of action within the game and the top prize of 48150x your stake is very attractive.
