Gremlins After Midnight is a video slot developed by Light & Wonder that launched on 10th September 2026. Gizmo and his considerably less than well-behaved companions return in another adaptation of the 1984 comedy-horror, with the action unfolding after dark in the familiar Peltzer home.
Light & Wonder has taken inspiration from the ‘Don’t feed after midnight’ strapline. Fuzz Balls and Chicken Buckets reference the chaos that follows when the warning is ignored. Hold & Spin and Mystery Stacked Reels feature prominently, while the reported maximum win reaches 2,500x the stake.
Feeding a Mogwai after midnight was never going to end well. Our Gremlins After Midnight slot review finds out what happens when Light & Wonder breaks the rules once again.
Gremlins After Midnight at a Glance
Gremlins After Midnight RTP and Technical Details
Gremlins After Midnight features a traditional 5×3 layout with 20 fixed paylines. Winning combinations land from left to right across consecutive reels, starting from the first reel.
The default RTP is 96%, although some operators may offer lower configurations of 94% and 90.01%. Volatility is rated medium-high.
Stakes range from 0.20 to 100 per spin, although UK limits restrict online slot stakes to £5 for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24.
The maximum win is 2,500x the stake. This coincides with the Grand Jackpot, the highest of four fixed jackpot prizes available during Hold & Spin.
Design
It’s midnight at the Peltzer home, and the warning has clearly gone unheeded. Gizmo stands beside the reels as moonlight pours through the window, illuminating a room now occupied by considerably less friendly visitors. Gremlin shadows appear around the edges of the screen, creating the sense that trouble is never far away.
The three large glowing green eggs above the reels represent More Money, Jackpot and Expanded Reels. Brightly coloured symbols contrast with the dark blue surroundings, while Gizmo reacts as events unfold. Light & Wonder has captured the playful menace of Gremlins without allowing the presentation to become overly cartoonish.
Hold & Spin transforms the room into a more chaotic scene. Gremlins emerge behind the reels as the grid expands to six rows and Fuzz Balls begin to accumulate. Gizmo remains prominent on the left, with the larger grid and increasing number of cash values naturally drawing attention towards the feature.
The darker palette in Gremlins After Midnight works well with the overall theme. Light & Wonder has resisted cramming every possible reference from the film onto the screen, relying on Gizmo, the Peltzer home and the Gremlins gathering in the shadows. It captures the film’s humour and mischief without losing the slightly sinister edge that made it memorable.
Symbols
Gremlins After Midnight features ten regular paying symbols that combine traditional card ranks with characters and objects from the movie. Wins require matching symbols across consecutive reels from left to right.
The lower-paying symbols are the J, Q, K and A. Five-of-a-kind awards 0.6x the stake. The higher-paying symbols are the red car, clock, Kate, Billy, 3D glasses and Gizmo. Five matching symbols award between 0.6x and 2x the bet.
Several special symbols have more important roles within the features. Fuzz Balls act as Wilds, while various Chicken Buckets and BOX symbols become relevant when the bonus features are activated. We’ll cover these separately below.
Gremlins After Midnight Features
Gremlins After Midnight has a few features, including first and foremost Fuzz Ball Wilds, Chicken Buckets, Mystery Stacked Reels and Instant Wins, with Gizmo making regular appearances throughout. However, the Hold & Spin feature is the main attraction, with its expanding grid and additional upgrades available.
Fuzz Ball Wilds
Fuzz Balls act as Wilds, substituting for regular paying symbols to help form winning combinations. They cannot substitute for Chicken Bucket Scatter symbols.
Chicken Bucket Symbols
Three Chicken Bucket symbols can appear on the reels, corresponding to the three Mogwai eggs above the grid. Orange Chicken Buckets are linked to More Money, Purple to Jackpot and Green to Expanding Reels.
When a coloured Chicken Bucket lands, it is collected by the corresponding egg. Mystery Chicken Buckets can reveal any of the three colours. Different combinations can trigger Hold & Spin, with the colours collected determining which features are activated during the bonus.
Mystery Stacked Reels
Any base game spin can trigger the Mystery Stacked Reels. Once triggered, Mystery symbols are added to random positions on the reels. Mystery symbols reveal most regular paying symbols.
Mystery symbols can reveal Mystery Chicken Buckets, which appear over the replaced symbols.
Scatter Fuzz Balls
During any base game spin, a Fuzz Ball may land on the reels and randomly trigger Scatter Fuzz Balls. Gizmo adds between two and five Fuzz Balls to random positions across the grid.
Fuzz Balls that land naturally award between 0.5x and 1.5x, while those thrown on the reels by Gizmo are worth between 1.5x and 10x
Instant Win Prize
If a Fuzz Ball lands during the base game, it may trigger Gizmo to throw one to three BOX symbols randomly onto the reels. The BOX symbols do not land on Fuzz Balls or revealed Mystery Chicken Buckets.
The BOX symbols collect the values of all Fuzz Ball symbols, and a payout is awarded.
Hold & Spin
Any combination of coloured Chicken Buckets triggers Hold & Spin. The feature begins with three spins and three Fuzz Balls already locked on the grid. Each new Fuzz Ball landing also remains sticky and resets the counter to three. The round ends when no spins remain, or every position is occupied.
The Chicken Bucket colours determine which upgrades are active:
Orange – More Money: Orange Chicken Buckets increase the cash values attached to Fuzz Balls already on the grid. Each increase ranges from 1x to 10x the stake.
Purple – Jackpot: Purple Chicken Buckets become Jackpot symbols, awarding one of four fixed prizes: Mini, Minor, Major or Grand. Landing a Jackpot symbol also resets the spin counter to three.
Green – Expanded Reels: The grid expands from 5×3 to 5×6, doubling the available positions for Fuzz Balls and other feature symbols.
More than one upgrade may be active during the same Hold & Spin. Mystery Chicken Buckets that reveal a new colour during the bonus activate the corresponding upgrade and reset the remaining spins to three.
Buy Pass
The Buy Pass provides direct entry to Hold & Spin for 50x the stake. The feature begins with the active Chicken Bucket upgrade, or a combination of upgrades, selected at random.
Buy Pass availability depends on local regulations and is not available in the UK.
Gremlins After Midnight Verdict
Gremlins After Midnight makes good use of its licence without relying on nostalgia to do all the work. The darker Peltzer home setting captures the mischievous tone of the original, while Gizmo, Fuzz Balls and Chicken Buckets give the theme a clear role in the features.
Hold & Spin is where the slot has the most depth. The three Chicken Bucket upgrades change how the bonus develops, with More Money increasing Fuzz Ball values, Jackpot introducing fixed prizes, and Expanded Reels opening the grid to six rows. Activating more than one creates greater variation between bonus rounds.
A 2,500x maximum win and medium-high volatility are relatively restrained by modern standards. Gremlins After Midnight instead puts more emphasis on an interconnected set of features, with Mystery Stacked Reels, Scatter Fuzz Balls and Instant Wins feeding into the central Fuzz Ball concept.
Light & Wonder has produced a slot with more substance than a straightforward film-themed reskin. Gremlins After Midnight understands the licence, uses it intelligently and saves its best ideas for after dark.
