William Hill Slashes The Odds Of Cameron Handing Over The Reins
Published on by Becky Mosley
David Cameron is heading towards the biggest challenge of his time as Prime Minister this week. There has been much speculation about what his position might be after we cast our votes regarding the UK being part of Europe on Thursday. William Hill has slashed the odds on Cameron having to resign from his position before June is over – the betting giant is currently offering 5/2 to those who like a little flutter.
‘Continue To lead’
Cameron has told the British public that he will continue to lead the country whether voters choose to remain in Europe or not. Despite this, political experts have said that if we vote to leave, Cameron’s position will become untenable. They believe that if we leave Europe, we would be professing to have no confidence in the Prime Minister or his split party.
5/2 On Boris Taking Charge
Boris Johnson is considered to be David Cameron’s biggest rival, with many believing that he is a likely contender for the leadership of the Conservative Party. William Hill obviously agrees with this notion, as they are giving odds of 5/2 on Johnson taking charge. The third favourite to take the reins is Michael Gove at 6/1, and this is hardly surprising considering that Gove is thought of as the poster boy for Brexit.George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is believed to have lost the most in terms of his reputation and political standing during the European debates. Most bookies are giving odds of 9/2 that Osborne will take over from Cameron, so it would seem unlikely. At the current time, most UK bookmakers think that the wake of the EU referendum will produce a race for Tory leadership among 4 main candidates: Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Theresa May, and George Osborne. It remains to be seen whether the bookies are right on the money, but there is no doubt that the European decision will change the political landscape in the UK.
