UK Gambling Commission To Improve Industry Security
Published on by Becky Mosley
If there is one hot topic in the world of online casino gaming right now it is security. Players have not stopped short in saying how they feel when it comes to gambler safety (or lack thereof). Due to the general concern within the industry right now, the UK Gambling Commission has looked to implement brand new regulations as a means to further protect players.
‘Assessment’
Attempting to tackle gambling-related crime head on, the new regulations put forward must be adopted by all UK based online casino brands. For starters, every gambling operator that focuses on the UK market must carry out an “assessment” to determine the risks faced by money laundering. On top of this every online casino must show that they are taking sufficient steps to nullify the risks posed by such.
Money Laundering
Looking at the numbers, it is clear to see why the UK Gambling Commission has felt the need to up its anti-money laundering efforts. Between October 2014 and September 2015, 2,459 reports were made surrounding suspicious online casino activity. These figures, which were released by the National Crime Agency, show that money-laundering activities have become alarmingly regular.Coming off the back of two major money-laundering stories to occur last year, both Gala Coral and Paddy Power were fined for failing “to keep crime out of gambling”, new measures were deemed to be needed. On top of all this, a new regulation will be implemented industry wide that will prevent online casino and online bookmaker employees from “taking advantage” of irregular betting patterns. The new official rules will be enforced later this, with the UK Gambling Commission stating that it will be working closely with police on such matters forward.
