Paddy Power has a laugh with the Scots

Published on by

If you’re familiar with Paddy Power, you’ll know that their advertisements are almost always just a little bit controversial. The latest campaign is no exception, as it is based on encouraging Scottish people to bet on England to lose in Euro 2016.It’s impossible to escape the current football fever that is surrounding Euro 2016. England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have all had a chance to showcase their sporting skills and pit them against other countries. Sadly, Scotland have not been able to do this, as they failed to pass the qualifying rounds.

Take Advantage

Paddy Power decided that they would take advantage of the fact that Scotland hasn’t qualified for Euro 2016 in the most cheeky and potentially amusing way possible. The sportsbook provider has developed a TV advertisement that encourages the Scots to put some money on England having to bow out of Euro 2016 – and to be proud of doing so.https://youtu.be/rLq340eDTCA

The Ad

The advert opens in the Scottish countryside – featuring lush green hills and a man in the background playing a drum whilst wearing traditional Scottish garb. A hearty looking young Scotsman appears – complete with chin length messy red hair, a Scottish shirt and a kilt complete with sporran. The man shouts ‘Where do you think we’re from? ‘ He then answers ‘We’re from Scotland!’The Scotsman sings a little joke for viewers: ‘Do you think we’re gonna cry cause we didnae qualify?’ it’s clear that there is no sadness here, as he marches surrounded by an army of his own people – who are all kitted out with kilts, flags, bagpipes, and drums. This army marches proudly in the Scottish hills, and is joined by celebrities like The Krankies, Michelle McManus and two former footballers. The Paddy Power TV advert concludes with a jolly proclamation that the Scots will ‘bet on youse to lose’ – and they seem pretty delighted to be doing so, as the group patriotically shouts ‘Scotland!’
