Odds Released: Who Will be the Next England Manager?
Published on by Andrew Mills
Roy Hodgson only really had one choice after England’s hugely embarrassing exit from Euro 2016 at the hands of Iceland, and that was to step down, which he did honourably in the wake of the loss. Now the shock of the unexpected and humiliating loss has subsided, eyes now turn to who will be replacing Hodgson as the next England manager, and the odds show a clear favourite.
The likely candidates
At 2/1 with bwin, Gareth Southgate, who as a player has a history with unceremonious exits from Euro competitions, is the strong favourite amongst bookmakers, although social media has made the disinterest of the public in this choice very clear.Southgate has done an excellent job with the under 21s team, although they, similarly to the main squad, have struggled to excel in high pressure situations.Behind Southgate there are a few other popular options with bookmakers, including Glenn Hoddle at 10/1, who Alan Shearer has suggested should share the job with Southgate.
The outside shots
Alan Pardew has not had what one would call an unblemished managerial record, and was involved in several controversies as a player, but that has not stopped bookies putting him at 12/1.Sharing the odds of 16/1 is Harry Redknapp, who was without doubt the people’s choice when Hodgson was appointed, but this popularity has waned and the general consensus is that his time has passed.Sam Allardyce is the other 16/1 shot, Big Sam has a solid managerial history and would be seen as a safe bet by many, whether a safe bet is what the FA needs right now however, remains to be seen. With others like Jürgen Klinsmann, who has done a stellar job with the USA team, and Gary Neville, who would be a popular choice but is probably too young at this point, still in the mix, it seems that this conversation is far from over.
