The UK Gambling Act has been modified to allow ‘good cause’ lotteries in the regulated market to deal with less red tape. The changes, which have been put into action this week, have loosened requirements placed on low-level lotteries, though the law will still require them to be fair and support genuinely good causes. Members will also be able to promote private society lotteries for both charitable and non-commercial purposes if tickets remove specific information.
Incidental Lotteries
Work lotteries can also now be utilised for fundraising as long as it’s not for private or commercial growth. Meanwhile, incidental non-commercial lotteries have been entitled incidental lotteries and can occur at non-commercial and commercial events to raise money for good causes. The results must also be announced during or following the event.David Evennett, Minister for Gambling and Lotteries, explained: “This is welcome news for fundraisers across the country.“The government’s decision to remove this unnecessary red tape will be of great benefit to charities and good causes, encouraging more people to hold small lotteries and raffles.“Money raised through lotteries makes a huge difference to local communities and this change in the law will ensure they continue to thrive.”
