GVC Holdings Acquires Ladbrokes Coral

The modern iGaming market is dominated by giants, and one name is rising above all others. GVC Holdings PLC has acquired bwin.party as well as Betboo and Sportingbet in the recent past, and the owner of Foxy Bingo has now taken its acquisitions to a whole new level after having an offer of £4 billion accepted by Ladbrokes Coral.

A recently formed giant of the industry in its own right, Ladbrokes Coral has ownership of close to 4,000 betting shops, and the online presence of GVC, which will own 53% of the group if regulators approve the deal, should create a monster between the land-based dominance the company already has, and the online dominance that may follow.

There’s some things to be aware of here, for example, the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is currently weighing up whether to reduce the current limits of fixed odds betting terminals (FOBTs) or indeed scrapping them altogether.

However, this has all been taken into account by GVC, reports say, and with the possibility of the US market legalising sports betting in 2018, this is an educated risk.

It’s only been a year since the merger between Ladbrokes and Coral was finalised, so this acquisition will likely come as a surprise to many, as GVC continue their quest for dominance.

Regulation Changes

After regulation changes in recent years, mergers and acquisitions have become far more frequent throughout the gambling industry, and there have been many big and important deals signed between established companies within the industry.

However, GVC has very much found its way to the top of this list, and with this latest acquisition, the this is a company that may well be unstoppable, the only question is where they will go next.
