CEO of UKGC Warns Gambling Operators of Dangers of Advertising on Young People
The CEO of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) Neil McArthur has issued a stark warning to gambling operators.
In a key-note speech at the Raising Standard conference in Birmingham, McArthur stated that 25% of 18 to 25 year olds were problem gamblers, with a further 50% more at risk of developing issue with gambling.
McArthur asked operators to put customers’ safety first and focus on the prevention of gambling related harm.
Pulling no punches
In his speech, McArthur made the importance of change clear, and implored operators to be the first to make the move, saying:
“I want consumers in Britain to be able to enjoy the fairest and safest gambling in the world… and to achieve my aims I need your support: I need you to work together to make sure you are the best – the fairest, safest – gambling operators in the world….
“This is a call to action to join the race to the top.
“A race to put your customers, their enjoyment and their safety at the top of the agenda for your management meetings, your board meetings and meetings with your investors.
“A race to approach the minimum requirements we impose as exactly that: minimums not maximums. A race to look for real solutions to the public health issue of gambling-related harm.”
Public concern
Adding to McArthur’s comments, Advertising Standards Authority boss, Guy Parker, said:
“The existing rules that regulate the content and targeting of gambling advertising are working effectively, but there is public concern about the timing and quantity. Today’s Gambling Commission conference is a great opportunity for gambling firms to discuss how those concerns might be addressed.”
It is clear that the UKGC’s focus on protecting vulnerable players is here to stay.
