Poor King Kong. There he was, minding his own business along with the other monsters on Skull Island in the Pacific Ocean, when an American film crew captured him, shipped him to New York City, and exhibited him as the Eighth Wonder of the World.

As you can imagine, this made the giant gorilla rather angry, and he climbed the Empire State Building with a fair maiden clutched in his enormous mitt. The first King Kong movie aired in 1933, and since then, there have been two remakes in 1976 and 2005. He has also starred in numerous cartoons, comics, theme park rides, and just lately, several slot games.
In this review, we concentrate on the Cryptologic version. This monstrous slot has five reels and 25 pay lines, and features icons like skulls, nasty-looking spiders, ships, those famous biplanes that circled around his head, along with roaring gorilla animations.

Spin from a penny a go, and win up to £75,000 per line. The King Kong logo is the Scatter.

King Kong game theme

The game loads and you are met with a slightly-cheesy sounding fanfair – not particularly fitting to herald the arrival of such a majestic beast, but the sound is easily turned off. The graphics are dark and edgy, whilst still maintaining a cartoon-theme. The night-time New York City backdrop gives it an edgy vibe, and if you’re not a fan of spiders, then you probably won’t like the horrific arachnids that look ready to bite your face. When you get a win, King Kong roars to life, crashing through the reels, and baring his teeth.

Game play

Play is relatively straightforward, and if you’ve never played before, you should pick the rules up in no time, thanks to the help section which is accessed by clicking the Information button.

First of all choose your bet – you can stake from as little as a penny, up to £500. This really is a game to suit all pockets and budgets.

In total, the game has 15 win lines. Click the BETS + and – to increase or decrease the amount you wish to bet per line. Click the LINE + and – to choose the amount of lines you want in play. Ready to race those reels? Press SPIN to set the reels in motion.

Features

One of the coolest features is King Kong Goes Ape. This is triggered when Kong shows his mush on reel 3. This means that all positions on the reel become substitutes, and you can also make additional substitutes on reels 2 and 4.

King Kong likes to smash things up, and the Smash Feature is triggered if you get three or more scatter symbols left to right. In this round, you’ve got to select aeroplanes for Kong to smash – keep on selecting them until he misses three. With every plane he smashes, you increase the number of Free Games. Alternatively, you can dismiss the Free Games, and choose one of three mystery prizes.

Once you have chosen a mystery prize, you forfeit all Free Games. It’s a gamble, but that’s the fun of the game. Just remember that if you re-trigger the feature during the Free Games, you get the same number of Free Games, however, the Feature is not repeated. The Mystery Prize can be fairly substantial, as it is multiplied by the triggering bet. During Free Games, the Goes Ape feature cannot be triggered.

Play in fun mode if your casino allows it, and when you’re ready to unleash the power of King Kong, then feel free to Go Ape. After all, it could yield huge rewards.
