The Laser payment method was a type of debit card payment system that was used in Ireland. The system was operated and maintained by a not-for-profit organisation known as Laser Card Services. The system was established in 1996. 14 years later approximately three million Laser cards were being actively used.
In fact, in 2009, a staggering 195 million transactions using Laser Card were made that were worth a collective 11.2 billion Euros. However, in 2007 the institutions that had been involved in the circulation of Laser Cards started to replace these types of debit cards with MasterCard and Visa alternatives. On the 28 February 2014, Laser cards were removed from the debit card market.

The Laser Card was essentially an electronic debit card which could be used in stores as well as over the internet and for transactions made over the telephone. The Laser Card could also be used to make cash withdrawals from ATM machines, as well as to make regular payments via direct debit for bills.
One advantage of the Laser payment method was the fact that up to 100 Euros in cashback was available to users who made purchases for services or goods with a Laser prepaid card. The cashback was merely added to the total value of the purchase. Although certain retailers put a lower limit on the amount of cashback a laser cardholder could receive each time they made a purchase.
In 2005, some Laser Cards were co-branded as Maestro/Laser cards and from January 1, 2008, every Laser Card had been co-branded with Maestro. These co-branded Laser/Maestro cards had both Maestro and Laser functions and were chip and PIN cards. However, the Laser function of the cards was only available to use in the Republic of Ireland.
