The Danish Gambling Authority Raps Mr Green’s Knuckles after Due Diligence Failures

William Hill owned Mr Green received a warning from the Danish Gambling Authority after failures in assessing a ‘young’ customer’s funds.

According to the regulator, a young player was able to deposit DKK 325,000 into the account without sufficient due diligence checks as to whether the customer could afford to spend said funds or the source of funds which breached rules regarding money laundering.

Online Search

Mr Green defended their actions and admitted they did check the customer in question in an online search of their employment and levels of earnings and concluded the customer was able to finance their gambling and stopped the investigation.

Further investigations by the regulator concluded the level of KYC (know your customer) checks were insufficient and inaccurate regarding the customer’s income and did not rule out money laundering activities.

Warning

After further checks, it was established the customer’s expenditure far exceeded their annual income and a warning was issued by the regulator. Mr Green has been lucky to get away with a warning rather than a financial penalty. The regulator insisted Mr Green be more vigilant in the future and make sure the appropriate KYC checks are carried out. If repeated offenses are committed by the operator this would lead to much more severe sanctions by the regulator.

In 2020, Mr Green saw the wrath of the UK Gambling Commission after failings came to light. Regulators in all markets across the world take gambling responsibilities seriously, and any failures by operators are frowned upon often leading to severe sanctions or even license suspension.

Mr Green has assured the regulator they have introduced new procedures regarding KYC measures and their obligation to investigate much more thoroughly moving forward.
