Las Vegas Casinos close due to Coronavirus

Las Vegas; the city that never sleeps and so far, never closes its casinos, that is until now. The Covid-19 virus hit the headlines and continues to affect both people and industries all over the world. Today, Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts have taken unprecedented action and will close their doors until further notice. This comes as further guidelines have been released advising people not to attend any kind of gathering or events of more than 50 people.

Casino closures and social distancing

The announcement was made last night and the casinos will close today. It is thought they will remain closed for around 2 weeks but no official re-opening dates have been published. MGM Resorts have also said they will not be taking any new bookings until 1st May 2020.

Other casinos around the world have also taken the decision to close for the foreseeable future. Just last week, the famous Casino de Monte Carlo in Monaco, closed its doors indefinitely due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Macau recently imposed a mandatory 2 week closure of all its land-based casinos.

Although some casinos are closing their doors, many are remaining open but taking additional precautions to ensure ‘social distancing’. Casinos in Australia run by Crown Resorts, are closing half of their gaming machines to ensure players keep their distance. They are also limiting the spaces at their gaming tables and roulette wheels and have limited the number of people in public dining areas to 450.

Will UK casinos close due to Covid-19

As yet, no casinos in the UK have closed, but a confirmed case of the virus in a UK bingo hall has put 25 people into quarantine. The UK Prime Minister has also recommended that people stay away from theatres, restaurants, shopping centres and social hot spots and to only visit places deemed essential, so it’s only a matter of time until we see UK casino closures.
