£500 Spending Limit for Under 25s In Place
Campaigners have been calling for the Government to introduce loss limits as part of their review of the 2005 Gambling Act, but Flutter Entertainment are already one step ahead. The operator behind Betfair, Paddy Power and Sky Betting and Gaming have announced the introduction of a £500 limit for all UK and Ireland players under the age of 25.
Risk Based Affordability Measures
Although any loss limits are not legally required, Flutter Entertainment have often lead the way and introduced their own enhanced social responsibility measures in a bid to offer their players the greatest protection. When the UK banned all credit card payments for gambling sites, Flutter went one step further and also introduced the ban in Ireland too. They have stopped pre-watershed advertising for large sporting events such as football Euro’s matches and are now even using Adtech technology to ensure that under 25s are not targeted by paid for social media advertising.
The new £500 cap on under 25s is the latest in their risk-based affordability checks, which currently use real-time data and player monitoring tools to determine whether players are at risk of developing gambling related issues.
Proof of Income
Flutter understand that players under 25 are at a point in their lives where they’re starting to gain more independence and making financial decisions. They want to ensure those financial decisions are sensible and in line with their income, so any player wishing to spend more than £500 will have to undergo detailed checks to ensure they’re able to afford any further losses. At which point, a new limit can then be set.
The CEO of Flutter explained “We want anyone who decides to gamble when they come of age to get in the habit of setting sensible spending limits and this measure is the latest we are introducing to help make this happen…
“The review provides a once in a generation opportunity to bring gambling rules into the digital age, and while we believe that the changes it will bring are critical, we won’t wait to implement ground-breaking policies that will make a difference for our customers.”
